Race Recap - Atlanta Motor Speedway

Jimmie Johnson scored his second straight NEXTEL Cup Series victory last Sunday in Atlanta and moved within 9 points of Jeff Gordon. 4 time series champion Jeff Gordon, came in with a 7th place performance.

Johnson took his only lead on Lap 322 of a scheduled 324-lap battle and crossed the finish line in front of 2nd place Chase contender Carl Edwards under caution in a green-white-checkered flag finish on Lap 329. Johnson completed his third track sweep of the season with his second Atlanta win of 2007.

Atlanta native Reed Sorenson placed third, Matt Kenseth took fourth and Richard Childress Racing veteran Jeff Burton closed out the Atlanta race top five.

Edwards advanced one spot in the series standings to fourth in points. Kenseth moved from 12th to 11th in the Chase standings and Burton ascended one spot in the series standings to eighth. Clint Bowyer stayed within championship range with a sixth-place finish.

Tony Stewart fell from 4th to 5th in the point standings following his 30th-place Atlanta showing while Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick stayed in the sixth and seventh Chase spots even after their lousy race finishes.

Kurt Busch moved up from 10th to ninth in the standings with an eighth-place finish. Denny Hamlin, who apparently had fuel tank issues, lost two spots in the Chase and is now 10th in point standings.

Martin Truex, Jr., dropped from 11th to 12th in the standings after contact with Kyle Busch and Hamlin during a race restart on Lap 324. Truex, Jr., held the lead a race-high five times and led a race-high 135 laps.

The Nextel Cup Series continues next week with the 34th race of the 36-races at Texas Motor Speedway on November 4th for the Dickies 500.
