Things to Do in and Around Cleveland

Despite its bad reputation, there are lots of fun things to do in and around Cleveland. Cleveland has some very nice neighborhoods, including Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, and Beachwood. The Amish country is also nearby. Although Cleveland has lost its manufacturing base, there are also some exciting places to visit in the city, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Tower City Mall.

I grew up in Cleveland Heights, an upscale old suburb about 10 miles east of downtown Cleveland. Cleveland Heights is a nice, quiet neighborhood. I lived there from age 4 to age 8 and have been back several times since. It has a large Jewish population and some very good delis. My family's favorite deli for years has been Corky and Lenny's, which features some terrific matzoh ball soup as well as some other great delicacies.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is one of my favorite places to visit in the Cleveland area. This is a museum devoted to the history of rock and roll. It features several displays of some rock and roll legends, including their wardrobes and their instruments.

The Tower City Mall is another fun place to visit in downtown Cleveland. It opened in around 1990, following a 30-year hiatus period in which the Terminal Tower was only used as an office building. Now it's a central hub for the rapid transit system, the RTA. It also boasts numerous shops and features some nice fountains and other displays.

The Amish country is worth a day's trip to see. About an hour east of Cleveland there are several Amish towns. The Amish are a very traditional group of people of German ancestry, who refuse to use electricity or other modern appliances. They ride around in horses and buggies and dress in 19th century garb. However, they will use modern technology as long as it's not their own.
